How we rank budget mattresses
Every pick on this site comes out of the same five-factor score. This page says exactly what goes into it, and — more importantly — what does not, so you can decide how much weight to give our opinion.
What goes into a score

What we do not measure
We do not run a sleep lab. We have no pressure-mapping rig, no calibrated firmness probe, and no climate-controlled room. Any site at this price point claiming instrumented lab results on a $200 mattress is worth a second look. Our scores come from specs, warranty terms, price history and owner reports.
Where the data comes from
- Manufacturer specifications: foam density, coil count, layer thickness, cover material
- Warranty documents, read in full rather than summarised from the product page
- Verified-purchase owner reviews, weighted toward reports from 12 months and later — that is when budget foam fails, not in week one
- Price tracking, so a "40% off" claim can be checked against what the mattress normally costs
- Published sleep research for the general guidance, cited inline wherever we make a claim about health or sleep
When a ranking changes
A pick moves when the price moves enough to change the value calculation, when the manufacturer changes the construction, when durability reports turn at the 12-month mark, or when something better arrives at the same price. We re-check the main guides quarterly and update the date at the top when we do. Changing only the date without changing the substance is a trick, and we do not do it.
Conflicts of interest
We earn an Amazon commission on purchases made through our links. Commission rates are effectively the same across the mattresses we cover, so there is no financial reason to prefer one over another — and we would rather tell you the $180 pick is enough than push you to the $600 one.
