What $300 actually buys you in a mattress

We analyzed 128 budget mattresses sold online โ€” pulling live price, size, type and rating data โ€” to answer a simple question shoppers keep asking: how cheap can you go before sleep quality suffers? Here's what the numbers say.

Spend an hour shopping for a cheap mattress and you'll hear two opposite things: "you get what you pay for" and "expensive beds are a rip-off." We wanted real numbers, not opinions โ€” so we compiled a live sample of 128 budget mattresses, cleaned the data, and measured what your money actually gets you in 2026.

How we did it: We pulled live listings for budget mattresses across all four common sizes from Amazon's US marketplace via the DataForSEO Merchant API on June 21, 2026, then de-duplicated by product, removed non-mattress items (toppers, frames, protectors) and obvious mis-priced outliers, and computed the statistics below on the remaining 128 mattresses (representing roughly 2.35M customer ratings). The cleaned dataset is published openly under CC BY 4.0 โ€” see cite this study.

Key findings

85%

of budget mattresses analyzed cost under $300 โ€” and 57% cost under $200. A "cheap mattress" really is cheap in 2026.

$177

was the median price across all sizes (average $208), ranging from $60 for a basic twin to $630 at the top of the budget tier.

4.37โ˜…

average customer rating โ€” and 85% of beds scored 4.3 stars or higher. Low price did not mean low satisfaction.

$17.87

median price per inch of mattress height. The typical budget bed is 10" thick โ€” the floor for adequate support.

37%

of budget models are now hybrids (coils + foam), once a premium-only feature โ€” a sign the budget tier has leveled up.

~3ร—

price gap between the median twin ($92) and median king ($273) โ€” size, not brand, is the biggest cost driver.

Median price by mattress size

Size is the single biggest driver of price in the budget tier. Here's the median price for each size in our sample:

Twin$92$10623
Twin XL$107$1053
Full$140$15129
Queen$190$21735
King$273$31034
Cal King$300$3013

The headline: a budget queen โ€” the most popular size โ€” has a median price of just $190, and 91% of the queens we analyzed came in under $300. See our best budget queen picks for specific models.

Foam vs hybrid: how the budget market splits

The biggest shift in cheap mattresses is construction. All-foam beds (memory foam + gel memory foam) still make up the majority at 57%, but hybrids now account for 37% of budget listings โ€” coil-and-foam builds that were a premium-only feature a few years ago.

Interestingly, hybrids carry only a small price premium in the budget tier (median $200 vs ~$160 for all-foam) โ€” which is why we increasingly recommend them. Compare the two in our budget hybrid and budget memory foam guides.

Price-per-inch and the $300 question

To compare value across sizes and types, we measured price per inch of mattress height. The median budget mattress is 10 inches thick and costs $17.87 per inch. That 10-inch mark matters: below about 8 inches, a foam mattress rarely has enough core to support an adult without bottoming out.

So, what does $300 buy in 2026? Based on our data, $300 comfortably covers a 10"+ queen mattress from an established brand with a 4.3โ˜…+ rating and a 90โ€“120 night trial โ€” often a hybrid. You are not buying a worse night's sleep by shopping the budget tier; you're mostly skipping showroom markup and brand premiums. Where price does buy more: edge support, advanced cooling, and 10-year-plus durability.
